Neck Pain and Headaches

Neck pain and headaches are very common. Triggers including stress, trauma, poor posture, heavy lifting and sinus problems may lead to tension in the neck and shoulders.

Osteopaths are trained to be able to examine and differentiate between headaches derived from mechanical dysfunction or a more serious pathology.

Head symptoms may include:

  • Headaches (pain over any part of the skull or feel like they are behind the eyes): many headaches stem from problems in the neck either from trauma, motor vehicle accident (MVA) or from wear and tear
  • Jaw pain/clicking: may arise after a visit to the dentist or due to grinding the teeth
  • Sinusitis
  • Glue Ear

Neck symptoms may include:

  • Neck and shoulder pain – you may wake up with neck pain one morning or it may develop over time possibly due to poor posture
  • Reduced range of motion in the neck
  • Arm pain referring from neck, due to entrapment of nerves
  • Spasming of muscles in the neck/shoulders

To assist a patient on preventing the chances of continued neck pain and headaches, your Osteopath may advise you on:

  • Ergonomics of your work pace
  • Improving posture
  • Reducing stress
  • Advising stretches and exercises
  • Staying hydrated and understanding your triggers (e.g. foods)
